Nature of Geography as a Subject

The purpose of the proposed lesson is to explain the nature of the subject.  It throws light on the importance of geography and describes the nature of geography as a subject.  It tries to broaden the knowledge and explains the basic concepts as well as technical terms, which are the components of geographical knowledge.  Apart from this, it tries to develop concepts in orderly and systematic practices and increases the interest of the subject.  Geography is one of the oldest geosciences and its foundations are visible in the works of early Greek scholars.  The word geography was first used by the Greek scholar Eratosthenes in the 3rd century BC Geo "Describing the Earth and Graphy" Geography literally means, which describes the Earth's surface surfaces. In other words, "Geography on a broad scale".  It studies the interactions of all physical and human facts and the landforms resulting from these interactions.  "It explains how, why and where human and natural activities arise and how these activities are interrelated with each other. The study method of geography has changed.  Today this topic not only describes, but also analyzes as well as predicts. In this lesson you will be able to learn about the importance of geography in daily life. This study will make you very interesting about your place.  Will encourage you to understand.

1.1 Geography in Daily Life

You must have noticed that the surface of the earth is constantly changing.  In general, natural elements like mountains, rivers, lakes etc. change slowly while cultural elements like buildings, roads, crops etc. change rapidly.  While traveling from one place to another you would feel that the number and types of trees are changing from one area to another.  All this is happening as a result of the constant interactions of the environment in which we live and use it.  Geography studies such patterns.  Another aspect of geography is to understand the factors or causes of regional variation, how social, cultural, economic and demographic factors are changing physical landforms and new landforms are being formed as a result of human intervention.  For example, humans are using forest or barren land as human settlement.  Geography is often referred to as the art of map making and study.  Maps present us a more accurate and clear depiction of the earth's surface than the drawings.  As in the past, even today the geographical details of an area are available in reports, travel diaries and gazetteers.  Presently maps can be prepared using the tools of Geographic Information System (GIS) using satellite images.  Computers easily convert information from satellite photographs into maps that show the changes in development.  Society benefits from this type of information.  Presently there is a great demand for such cartographers.  Nowadays, geographers, engineers, environmental scientists, city planners, social scientists and others are also learning to use geographic information systems to better understand the Earth.
Geography not only explores what is where on earth but also why it is here.  Geographers study the location of activities to identify patterns by careful use of maps as well as find out the reasons for the formation of these patterns.  After this the areas are described on the basis of distribution of landforms, population, type of houses and agriculture.  They obtain information about the relationship and movement between places and draw conclusions about the spatial processes taking place in that area.  Presently the whole world is grappling with problems like food security, health, efficient use of energy and environmental protection.  Issues of equity and sustainable development are also of equal importance.  All these can be achieved only by sustainable use of resources.  The study of geography is essential to know more about environmental processes and to understand how land use planning can be helpful in solving problems.
In short:
 1. Geography is the science of place.  2 .  Maps are an essential tool for geographers.
 3.  Digital Geographic Information System is a new tool for making maps.
4. With the study of geography and the use of maps, spatial planning can be done.
